About The Artwork

Candid portrait of a man walking across the iconic hall of Grand Central Station in New York City, 2019. I'm not sure how, but when I photograph men in the street, I find myself projecting the idea that they are at a crossroads through my lens. When I return home and open the portrait on my computer, I immediately compare the image of this man to available artistic representations of men from various historical periods. During my own lifetime, when looking at photographs of men in public spaces from my grandfather's era, you would rarely see a man without a suit jacket, a tie, and even a hat. This leads me to contemplate artistic depictions of men throughout history. They have been secularized as seen in Manet's work, idealized into corpulent figures by Rubens, erotized as biblical figures by Renaissance painters, and rendered with idealized forms in Greek sculpture, among many other representations. This is just within the context of European culture. If we delve into different cultures, we can explore depictions like the Mayan Captives at Bonampak, showing fallen figures before conquerors imbued with otherworldly spirit powers. Or consider Muisca golden figurines from my own cultural background, depicting men with seamless fusions of zoomorphic components and anthropomorphic bodies. What were the personal and collective cosmologies of all these men? Now, looking at this man in the photograph, Giacometti's walking man comes to mind once again. What is the personal and collective cosmology of this man in this era, in this geographical context, in his attire, with the ID lanyard around his neck, and his open, rolled-up shirt? Even his stride possesses a quality, texture, cadence, and sound that no other man in the history of our species has ever had. Take a moment to let these intricate details sink in. This is one of a multiverse of "Walking Man" in my time.

www.MA9.co Fine art photography by Marco Aurelio. ARTIST STATEMENT I photograph the individual on the street to create site-specific visual ethnographies. I also photograph still-life as a way of exploring the beauty of design and form in the natural world. BIO Born and raised at the foot of the South American Andes within a family of generational farmers, I was exposed to native oral traditions, pre-Columbian indigenous art and cosmologies, magical-realism experiences, and the sociopolitical dynamics of the region. I earned a Liberal Arts degree from New York University, which encompassed studies in European history, anthropology, and Western philosophy. Starting as a self-taught photographer, I enhanced my craft by attending courses at The International Center of Photography and The School of Visual Arts in New York City. Following a strong academic curiosity, I ventured into archaeology and anthropology at The City College at CUNY and deepened my understanding of writing, music history, and anthropology at Columbia University. Journeys through photojournalism and portrait photography, combined with interests as varied as ontology, Eastern philosophy, physics, and the metaphysical elements in the fiction of Jorge Luis Borges, continue to shape and inform my fine art photography practice. Today, New York City is both my home and a creative sanctuary.
