About The Artwork

The great Australian artist, Tom Roberts once said, “It was in Australia that I gained my first impressions of the beauty of the world, and it was the Bush that taught me.” I can relate to his sentiments. The Australian countryside is not overtly attractive, but once in the midst of the bush I’m almost overwhelmed by the landscape, particularly when it’s devoid of people, and when the wildlife is doing what it does when not encumbered by a human presence. I grew up in the country, and this project is, in a way, a nostalgic trip back to my childhood. There’re the open spaces that dominate the landscape, there’s the isolation, and then there’s that pervading realization that the worries of the world are easily discarded so far from the complications of the urban environment. One even begins to ponder what the landscape was like before the arrival of Europeans; what the physical landscape meant to the traditional owners. As a kid I was drawn to creeks, rocky outcrops, trees and hills - any place where something may be awaiting discovery, or a vantage point from where I could get an idea of the lie of the land. There was a sense of freedom and adventure in those wanderings. My photographs may illustrate a little of the appeal the country has for me, particularly when the harsh light of day dissipates, becomes softer, and heralds the heightened activity of wildlife; birds flock to roosting trees, kangaroos seemingly appear from nowhere, the occasional echidna trundles by or fox can be encountered lurking.

WAYNE FOGDEN is a Sydney based artist. His focus since the early 2000’s has been long term photographic projects with specific narratives. A minimalist at heart he uses just one camera and a single lens to make stunning, large-scale images using whatever light is available, and adheres to the great photographer, Ansel Adam’s philosophy, “A good photograph is knowing where to stand”. Aesthetically, his photographs triumph space and scale, with compositions that consider what information is excluded from the frame as carefully as what is included. His ongoing projects include Farmland, framing the countryside as a place of open spaces, isolation and nostalgia, as well as the long-term documentation of Italian interiors, treating the most iconic, beautifully extravagant palazzi and the lesser known, private villas with equal gravitas. Fogden has lived between Sydney and Melbourne, and initially worked as a commercial photographer primarily in editorial and advertising. He specialized in portraiture, fashion and travel. As a commissioned photographer Wayne produced imagery for the likes of American Express, The Australian Financial Review, Wish Magazine, FHM UK, FHM Lithuania, Inside Sport, AMP, Kayser, Bonds, Hanes and Spring Court. Over the past 20 years he has had portfolios of his personal work published by The Ink Group and in such magazines as Qantas' The Australian Way, Australian Traveller and Noise.
