About The Artwork

The Japan Fire ceremony, also known as the Omizutori, is an ancient Buddhist tradition that takes place at the Todaiji Temple in Nara, Japan. It is a two-week-long event that is held every year from March 1st to 14th During the ceremony, a group of monks known as the "water-drawing group" perform a series of rituals, including the lighting of large torches and the drawing of water from a well. The water is then used to extinguish the flames, creating a dramatic display of fire and water. The origins of the ceremony date back over 1,200 years, and it is said to have started as a way to pray for rain and a bountiful harvest. Today, the ceremony is also believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. The Japan Fire ceremony is a popular event among locals and tourists alike, and visitors are encouraged to come and witness the spectacular display of fire and water. However, as with any religious ceremony, it is important to be respectful and follow the rules and customs of the temple. © 2022 Hwan Kim . All rights reserved. Photography is a holy and humble record of history and humanity. If it is not recorded, no one will remember it. And if there is no record, they make an argument for each other's imagination. For a long time, I have been shooting with a focus on humans and rituals. Due to the development of modernization and civilization around the world, the native culture originally brought by humans is rapidly disappearing. The filming approach is attempted with ethnographic images. I am researching and filming the rituals, folklore, festivals and religious secrets of Korea, Japan, Nepal, Indonesia, Bali, Ladakh, and North India
