About The Artwork

Taken in 2019. Camera obscura naturalis. About Gero Troike: born in 1945 in Schönheide in the Ore Mountains, completed an apprenticeship as a laboratory technician for geology and mineralogy in Berlin and has been engaged in painting and graphic arts since 1965. After part-time jobs as a co-driver, stagehand and cemetery worker, he began working as a theater painter, kascheur and assistant stage designer in 1968. From 1975 he worked as a stage and costume designer at the Maxim Gorki Theater, the Volksbühne Berlin and the Deutsches Theater Berlin, working with directors such as Manfred Karge, Matthias Langhoff, Alexander Lang, Thomas Langhoff and Jürgen Gosch. At the Schauspielhaus Bochum he worked with Manfred Karge and Alfred Kirchner from 1984, later at the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Frankfurt Opera, the Amsterdam Opera and the Schaubühne Berlin with Jürgen Gosch. After the death of his daughter Sara in 1988, Gero Troike moved to Sauerland. From here followed directorial work in Wiesbaden, Gent, Bochum and at the Volksbühne Berlin. Since the 1990s, Gero Troike has been primarily occupied with painting and working on stage texts. In 1993, his play Dolgensee, ein Naturalist premiered at the Deutsches Theater Berlin under his own direction. In 2009, the death fantasy Gute Nacht, du falsche Welt also ran under Gero Troike's direction at the Volksbühne Berlin. About this project: The intention of this project was to capture the essence of an artist's personality photographically. For one year the photographer Manfred Haupthoff accompanied the painter Gero Troike and photographed his artistic work at certain intervals. The photographs were taken exclusively in the painter's studio. The condition was the accompaniment of the work without mutual, distracting conversation. Thus in the silence of the artistic activity of both succeeded a portrait of this outstanding and multilayered personality, without disturbing influences. Haupthoff could thus concentrate only on the scene and thereby artistically condense his photography. The photographs were taken predominantly in B/W. Some of the works were created without a lens with the camera obscura naturalis. So also in the artist portrait shown above. It takes a lot of experience to photograph people with this simple pinhole camera. The result, however, are unique photographs that are more like a vision of the person portrayed than a normal snapshot. The goal of the one-year project was to create a photographic documentation. Here as a bound book. This book is ( not yet ) intended for the public and is available only in a single edition, which is in the possession of the artist. The photograph shown here is from this project and so now also public. In later years, this photographic documentation will be made available to the artistic archive of Gero Troike in Berlin and remain there.

Essence of my artistic life: I am and remain curious and always ready to go new ways in photography. Essential projects of the last years are my series "Momentum" which captures the timeless spirit of cities, landscapes, lonely and hidden places and my series "Heimstatt" which shows the timeless living spaces, dreams and places of people without bringing the people involved into the picture. All my black and white camera obscura photograph are also a small reminder of Nicéphore Niépce who in 1826 made the world's first ever photograph with a camera obscura in an over 8 hour exposure.
