In 2019, a British photo magazine (published by Future plc) selected this picture of the Giza Pyramids for publication in the bookazine: “101 Amazing photos to take before you die.” On a journey through Egypt, we visited the Giza pyramids on January 6, 2019. Waking up in the morning, we were initially disappointed that the sky was covered as if there was a layer of thick smog in the distance. Where was the blue sky of yesterday? It is what it is, we said, and went off for a visit. But as soon as we entered the pyramids area, it became clear that this haziness was a true blessing – it did handsomely hide the city background of the pyramids. On top of it, the mistiness added a certain unreal feel to the entire surroundings. It almost felt like a scenery in one of those Star Wars movies. We a made a big walking tour around the pyramids – out of reach for most (lazy) tourists – until we reached a higher spot from where the picture was taken. The mist indeed completely obscured the city in the background. And with the sun behind the clouds the light conditions were kind of enigmatic. I said to myself: “This is it! Bingo!”

Happily married for almost 40 years and proud father of two wonderful daughters. As a Co-CEO of a global US company, I have the opportunity to travel to many great places around the world – and my wife is able to accompany me thanks to the flexibility her university teaching job offers her. So, I have nothing to complain about – on the contrary, life is good to me and I try to be good to life and to the people around me. Because of my job, my life and travels may be a bit hectic at times, but quite often (especially when visiting new places), I take my camera with me. Finding some time off to make pictures (in the evening or early morning – although I’m not a morning person) is for me a perfect antidote to stress – it’s my way of unwinding. I’m a man without much patience, except when making pictures. With a camera in my hand I can take all my time and wait for “The Decisive Moment” (credit to Cartier-Bresson ?).
