About The Artwork

My father served as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II, and was stationed for a time at Keesler Field in Biloxi, Mississippi. While he was there an exhibit was held that featured art work by the base’s airmen, and my father bought a printed catalog of the show that I loved when I was young. My parents had a number of art books on their book shelves when I was growing up, which I grew to appreciate when I got older, but as an 8 year-old boy only the images in that Keesler Field catalog captured my imagination, especially a dramatic series of paintings that showed planes in aerial combat over Europe. I vividly remember B-24 bombers cutting strong diagonal lines across the pages of the book as they shot down enemy fighters, eluded bursts of anti-aircraft flak, and dropped their bombs. The images seemed to perfectly convey the glory, excitement and heroism that I associated with war, as a child. I had those paintings in mind when I composed this image, borrowing their sense of visual and narrative drama, but since I’m no longer a child unaware of the reality and horrors of war, I tried to tell a more complex story. That’s a tricky task, though. The filmmaker Francois Truffaut once said, “there’s no such thing as an anti-war film”, because any film that depicts the spectacle of combat inevitably creates a fascination with it. Limited edition of 30 - signed and numbered on the print below the image and on an enclosed Certificate of Authenticity. Printed on Canson Platine Fibre Rag, an archival fine art paper. Image printed area: 11.5 X 17.25 inches. Total print size including white borders: 13 x 19 inches. It will be shipped rolled, securely inside a shipping tube.

After a decades-long career as a commercial photographer I’ve turned my hand to producing more personal imagery. In my work I strive to evoke emotional and psychological truths by creating enigmatic, dream-like scenes steeped in symbolism. They depict impossibilities, paradoxes, and incongruities, but all rendered with precise, seamless realism. I’m inspired by the Surrealists, as well as by Renaissance art. Ideas for my images are sparked in a number of different ways, and each evolves as I weave them together from the raw materials of my photos and my imagination. Experimenting with different combinations of image elements until they take on a life of their own, I then begin the exacting detail work of making the impossible seem believable Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, I have lived for many years with my beautiful and inspiring wife on a steep hill in San Francisco, near our children and grandchildren.
