“La Señora del Muro” (The Woman of the Wall) This image is from my "Anonymous Portraits" Series. I was walking around the center of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, intently focused on a sign ahead, when I saw a movement out of the corner of my eye. I quickly turned around to this amazing sight and snapped a photo. There was only one opportunity because in an instant the old woman had disappeared around the corner wall. It was in that golden hour of late afternoon, and the soft light played upon the golden walls. I sometimes do extensive workups of my photos, even going over every pixel multiple times if necessary, but this one was perfect just as it was. The old, crippled woman was walking out of the picture, and there was a poster for an upcoming cajunto concert of contemporary music. The contrast between the old and the new was extreme. But the old and the new were in the same colors, and the edge of the poster frame was touching the shoulder of the figure. This image symbolizes the continuity and similarity between the old and the new. It has special meaning to me, for this was the image that made me realize I could be a good photographer. Street photography is very challenging because the photographer has to catch the correct perspective, lighting, and action to tell the story of the picture. As I mentioned in another narrative, Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of my major influences, called this “Le moment décisif” (The decisive moment) - the exact instant that tells the story. But just seeing an image is not enough. He also said, “... you have to cultivate talent. I think if you’re a photographer, to only cultivate your talent with photography is pretty dull. You have to read, you have to look at sculpture and paintings. That’s how you build this talent.” Street photography is perhaps the most challenging medium because the artist needs to show a universal truth in just one fleeting image. There is no second chance.

Betty Dabney is a retired professor of public health who has been a serious photographer for over twenty years. She has won awards in juried shows, had one-person shows, and exhibited in prestigious galleries. She says, “I strive to capture the essence of a subject, to make it seem more real than reality itself.” There is no formula for her work. Each image is what the subject calls for, whether it be color or black & white, contemporary or antique, figurative or abstract. Originally a painter, her work has a luminous, painterly quality that can make the viewer wonder if the image was real or not. She cites the Impressionists, Paul Cézanne, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eliot Porter, and Ansel Adams as major influencers of her work. She does not work in a studio. Rather, she captures colours and compositions in the real world with her artistic vision that beauty is everywhere; we only need look for it. The common thread running through all of her work is to evoke a reaction of pleasant surprise, for the viewer to think, “WOW – That is so beautiful!” Her work engages the viewers at a deep level and shows them how to see the world in new ways. After all, that is the nature and purpose of art. Come, let us make this beautiful journey together.
