For me personally, art is the love of an image that speaks to me. I studied art in Middlesbrough at Cleveland College of Art and Design, then went to University to study Graphic Design in Carlisle, and then changed after a year to study art at Leeds Metropolitan University, where I gained a degree in Contemporary Art Practices. Leeds is where I live. Im currently working with photograms. To me they are beautiful, enigmatic images, sometimes with a captivating strangeness to them. My first photograms were with greytone flavours such as Passion, Vitality, and Dynamic Unknown. I think they are mysterious and complex images that are full of character. I love the immense richness of variation that comes as a natural part of them. I make them because Im interested in delicate beautiful images. Originally I intended to use only flowers to create them, and experimented so much that I found myself creating a huge variation, with different materials and abstract styles. I think the images spark thoughts and questions, as to what's actually in the picture. They raise interest in the detail of the image, as they are hard to perceive, theres lots of detail which is ambiguous, vague and sometimes amorphous. Seeing all the textures, tones, gradients, alignments, silhouettes and shapes converge to form a whole image is intriguing and fascinating at times. The infinitely various ways in which these aspects can harmonize to form the photogram's character is very interesting. My current ones are the black lines on white backgrounds series, with elegant black expressive gestures running across simple white backgrounds. I think they are striking and delicate at the same time. They are dynamic expressions of style and grace. They are neat, simple, graceful, clean, and sometimes elegant. I think they are exciting as they are energetic, and they seem to display speed. They seem to have a definite positivity to them. To me they have a classic modern look, using simplicity to achieve effect. While the elegant black and white gestures have a quite simplistic appearance, the greyshade ones have a much more interpretive nature to them. Its interesting that they can have a very definite form and shape, yet are very ambiguous at the same time. They are open to interpretation the same way paintings are. They allow the viewer to see their own image, to interact, they are uncertain in their exact content.
