About The Artwork

Louise Emma Augusta Dahl was a prominent fashion photographer, known primarily for her work for Harper's Bazaar, in association with fashion editor Diana Vreeland. When I did this portrait, she was 92 with deteriorating mental strength. It was very sad to photograph one of the great fashion photographers of her era who was going in and out of clarity. One minute she was fully in the present moment as we were working, and the next she was talking about being in New York with her husband of many years and thinking it was still the mid-fifties. I captured the grande dame of the medium in the closet with her camera, her valises, and her clothes. Her pride in her own career as a fashion photographer is evident in this image. --- Over the last 30 years, Abe Frajndlich has taken portraits of his fellow photographers, artists, and other cultural figures. Frajndlich has succeeded in luring the world’s most famous photographers out from behind their cameras and in front of his. With extraordinary skill, he has trained his lens on people used to hiding their own eyes behind a camera. Of Frajndlich's approach to portraiture, photographer Duane Michals wrote, “[Abe Frajndlich] is haute couture not pret a porter. Each portrait is not so much a reproduction of the sitter’s face...Insight is Abe’s secret. Understanding, rather than mere observation, is what defines him as a photographer. To be Frajndlichized is to be immortalized.” If photography captures a moment, Frajndlich's portraiture choreographs one. His portrait images are not so much reflections of their subjects as reflections on them: loaded but often humorous studies of subjects engaged in a kind of photographic pantomime. As much as Frajndlich is open to his subjects, they open up for him. And many clearly appreciate his knowledge of their work.
