'Merry Old England' And so it was! Here we have a posed formal group portrait of young farmer Tobys. Analysis puts this at sometime between 1650 and 1670. Although the country may well have been in the midst of Civil war and turmoil, we see this party relaxing in fine style with one of the latest inventions, a moveable duck pond. This rare glimpse of the past shows to what extent popular TV shows of the late twentieth century were influenced by the middle classes of the mid seventeenth century. This image came to light in the last few years during a spring clean at Ludlow Civic Archive and is believed to have been taken in that locality.
