Meskel Durag by Maisha Marshallende - Limited Edition of 5 Photograph

Maisha Marshall-Ende is a photographer and video artist born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She recently completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at OCAD University in Toronto. Maisha's work explores Black culture in a Western context. Her understanding of race was shaped by her childhood in Ethiopia, where dark skin was the rule, not the exception. Ethiopia is an incredibly diverse country. There are a multitude of cultures, more than 80 languages spoken and a deep sense of pride and national identity rooted in the country's ancient history. In other words, Maisha did not grow up defining herself as a black woman, but rather as an Ethiopian woman. She never considered the colour of her skin to be her main characteristic; it was only one of the many elements of her evolving identity.
