About The Artwork

A relatively abstract image taken in Asakusa, Tokyo. Just 50 metres from the Kaminarimon gate. Even if you don’t know the name you may recognise it. A huge gate with its giant chōchin (big red lantern) outside of Sensō-ji temple. This is quite a unique gate and lantern and is highly photographed. It’s also surrounded by a huge number of people most of the time, so very difficult to photograph. As I don’t like to get too caught up in the masses, when I was first there I decided to spend some time walking around the back alleys and lanes next to the gate & temple. This leads me to this image The lane runs parallel to a row of tourist food / product stands that run between the gate and temple. I was struck by the contrast in the scene. The dark metal and the soft lantern light. Further mirrored in the Kanji which is sometimes angular, sometimes softly curving. I guess this image could be categorised as abstract. As a standalone image it probably doesn’t tell the full story of what I was feeling at the time. You wouldn’t know that Kaminarimon gate was about 50 metres away, surrounded by tourists taking pictures.
