Black and White gelatin silver print. Handcrafted author's print. Signed, dated and inscribed. One of series of "New York. World Trade Center.1972" photos. Ethel Virga, New York Photographer and artist. Born in Brooklyn in 1921. Graduated from Cooper Union Art School. She painted and drew, made metal wire sculptures and large fabric appliqués. She made store window displays for Abraham&Straus and Bergdorf Goodman. And then she discovered photography... She set up her own darkroom, did her own developing and printing, making tons of gorgeous black-and-white prints. Her archive covers twenty years of photography and consists of thousands of original black and white gelatin silver prints, contact sheets and negatives. In the seventies and eighties she had numerous solo and group shows. Her work has appeared in a number of magazines, including The New York Times, and "Le Nouveau Photocinema" Paris. Some of her works are kept in the archive of New York Public Library. Last thirty years all her works where hidden from public eye. At the end of 2016 her family has finally decided to open her archive to the public.
