J-F VERGEL is a Paris born, New York City based photographer. Self-taught, his work has been shown in solo and group shows in NYC. Also a professional guitarist and songwriter, he has played and performed in numerous punk and rock-n-roll bands since the mid-1970s. Documenting early tours started him shooting photographs and since 2007, he has focused on a full-time career in photography. J-F VERGEL is well-versed in both film and digital photography. His on-going project Quiétudes is a series of B&W photographs shot on 35mm film that have been described as, “fierce poetry of the moment somehow too quickly passed; like memento mori for the twenty-first century ,” by art historian Marianne Eggler. J-F VERGEL explores the aesthetic boundaries of motion and color in digital photography, evidenced in his visionary series New York Noises. In his project Web Cam Performers, he uses the medium to dramatic effect by exploiting the simultaneous social connection and disconnection of the wired world by shooting the views of live web cams.
