Paddle Out For Whales - Kids - Limited Edition 2 of 100 Photograph

AWARDED WINNING - SILVER WITH DISTINCTION - AUSTRALIAN PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS Gold Fibre Silk Fine Art Paper I am not really an event photographer, but whenever I can, I try to attend the Paddle Out For Whales, which is held in Hervey Bay on the east coast of Queensland each year. The event hightlights the plight of whales around the world and shows support by the local population. Hervey Bay is one of the best places in the world to see Whales, as they migrate from the warm waters north of Australia, to the Antartic. The people of Hervey Bay and surrounding area gather together and form a floating raft off the beach, at Scarness. They then hold a minutes silence. I was lucky that everything came together for this image. As the raft formed a light aircraft carrying members of the media passed overhead. A group of children watched from the beach with flowers strew in the water representing the Whales lost to hunting. The event can be quiet challenging to photograph because it is held in the middle of the afternoon when the Sun is at it’s strongest. This causes strong shadows. On this occation I was lucky at there was some cloud cover. This softened the light considerably.
