About The Artwork

Redcliffe Caves were quarried for sandstone to make bottles, and the honeycomb of tunnels that resulted used as storage for merchants trading out of Bristol Harbour. The ‘caves’ were used during the Napoleonic Wars to keep prisoners, but, contrary to popular belief, never the African slaves for which Bristol’s merchant history is infamous.
