Albert Renger-Patzsch photographed chimney stacks growing into the sky. It is almost as though you can vividly perceive their objects just from the description. In new functionalism, photography was employed apodictically, to make it possible to work in more than just a documentary way. The impression left by the object was “captured on canvas”. In this way, “character images” of machines, buildings etc.emerged. So what is different when Helmut Rueger says that he “photographs the feeling”? It is not only a question of the location. The new functionalist photographer conveys what he “sees”. While Helmut Rueger involves himself in the game with the object, in his perception, he becomes a part of the object being viewed. In the words of Helmut Rueger: “Here is a brief description of what I feel when I view the pictures in question, or also when focussing while setting up a picture: Quietness, calmness, closeness to nature or the object; being able to relate to a situation or a mood. I have a good, warm feeling which, if I get involved in it long enough, gives me strength and energy. In this respect, the wheel turns full circle – because it is usually the power, the strength of the simplicity of the subject which attracts me.” ........ Dr. C.
