Art Description

Photography: Black & White on Paper.

Once I saw this in front of me, I was obsessed. Couldn’t get it out of my mind until the image was completed. Shot on 4x5inch with a 150mm Rodenstock on a Sinar F, I would not be back in the darkroom for another couple weeks. The image was taken during a field trip to southern sinai whilst staying with fellow TIME photographer Tom Hartwell in Sharm el Sheikh. When I finally developed the negative, it was everything I had imagined. And the selenium-toned gelatin silver print was even better, but did require some burning and dodging.

“The negative is the equivalent of the composer's score, and the print the performance.” – Ansel Adams.
