Title.. 2016, Edition 1/5 Artist Inventory Number 2016.037.001 Hand signed, numbered, titled and dated on verso UltraChrome® HD archival inks on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm archival paper.(per side) white archival matte, UV Non-glare acrylic. Gary Horsfall hangs his hat in Seattle, Washington and lives his life wherever he can influence his work and travels to take him. In the past year that has spanned miles upon miles of walks across Seattle to a 1,200 mile 4x4 trek across The Northern Territories and Western Australia (Darwin to Broome along and off, Highway 1). Oh, and a couple, three or four places in all directions in between……… Overall, the theme behind my work is “unlocking what’s in plain sight.” A consummate observer of the world at large; art, beauty and creativity have always been a significant part of my life and in that, play themselves out through my photography. Through my work I seek to capture what I discover as I roam through my life. And, I’ve led a big life, or so I’ve been told. My observation is not subject to exclusive preferences. I’m drawn to capture people in their natural environments, the beauty of nature and the grandeur, large and small, of man-made objects. I hope that what you find most striking about my work is the nuance that’s there to be discovered through thoughtful, studied observation. I tell stories…… What do you see in the image, familiar to you though the subject may be, what haven’t you perhaps noticed before? What’s the relationship between the things that were captured? What’s the situation? Is a “complication” suggested? What question(s) arise for you as you immerse yourself in the image? What story can you imagine that answers those questions? You won’t find Waldo but sometimes you may be surprised by what you do find. Look up my image “Trinidad 2017 No.59. What’s in the bootblack’s right ear? It’s not a hearing aid……… Or, look up “Santiago 2017 No.6. When was the last time that you saw someone with four feet!?! See something unusual or unexpected in one of my other images (hint: look at mushrooms). Please send me an email and share . Perhaps you’ll see that my black and white work hearkens back to the Golden Age of photography spanning the late 1800’s through the 1950’s. At that time the world was transfixed by the likes of Steichen, Sander, the Weston’s, Cunningham, Walker, Frank, Abbott and Penn. My monochrome images interpret today’s world through the “lens” of that time period.
