About The Artwork

Inspired by the human condition and current issues of social justice around the world (thanks in large part to Trump), the series Silence arises from the idea that self reflection and reflection on the internal struggles of those around us is a necessary step toward positive societal change. In this piece, an open eye is superimposed onto the same eye shut. This is a self reflection challenge with respect to what we choose to close our eyes to, and therefore remain a silent participant to. More specifically, the inspiration for this piece comes from thinking about the myriad of social justice issues happening around us, to our fellow human beings, neighbours, friends, family... and how we choose to turn a blind eye to those we do not have the courage to speak up about. We choose our own silence, and we must acknowledge this choice before there is hope of changing.

Radina Droumeva is a conceptual photography-based artist living and creating in the small community of Ladner, BC, Canada. She finds endless inspiration in the peace and solitude of her natural surroundings. Radina's work explores physical and psychological relationships in her environment through surrealism of still life objects. Her scientific background as a bioinformatician allows Radina to combine biological and mathematical research techniques with digital processing. Radina's main approach to creating involves the use of iterative stages - photographs of individual objects or scenery are guided through a cyclical process, coaxing subconscious ideas to life.
