About The Artwork

This picture was created when I was invited by the curatorial team of the first retrospective exhibition "Past-forward: Stavros Economou Unarchived" at "SPEL," the State Gallery of Contemporary Art, Nicosia to contribute a series of photographs. Also, the photos were projected when the exhibition was moved at Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation in Marseill, France. Stefanos Kouratzis is an award-winning visual storyteller, photojournalist and columnist based in Cyprus and he served as the artistic director of the Limassol Photography Festival (LPF) for 2023. In 2022, he curated both exhibitions of photographer Sebastian Rich, titled "Fleeing to Safety" that took place at Kasteliotissa Hall in Nicosia and at the University of Cyprus, for UNHCR Cyprus and Universitas Foundation. He studied at the Focus School of Photography and New Media in Athens (Greece), and has continued his professional development with online courses at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and Magnum Photos. In 2018, he participated in the 16th Venice Biennale of Architecture as part of the Cyprus Pavilion, presenting three photographic projects. Three years later, in 2021, he contributed a series of photographs to the first retrospective exhibition, "Past-forward: Stavros Economou Unarchived," at "SPEL," the State Gallery of Contemporary Art in Nicosia. Additionally, these photos were projected when the exhibition was moved to Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation in Marseille, France. Kouratzis' project, "ELLE - Cyprus in the Feminine," was commissioned by Press and Information Office and opened the Nicosia International Festival in 2022. It was also exhibited at the Austrian National Library in Vienna in January 2023 and at Circulo de Bellas Artes, in Madrid (Spain) in November 2023. Selected awards include the Gomma Photography Grand 2021 (Finalist), PDN Photo Annual, IPA (International Photography Awards), PX3 (Prix de la Photographie, Paris), and Fujifilm EuroPress Awards (Cyprus). Over the years, he has collaborated with local and international media organizations, including AFP, Reuters, Associated Press, Xinhua, France24, Arte (France), and BBC Radio. He has covered major stories in hostile zones, including the Lebanon War in 2006, the Gaza Strip, Iran (the Bam City earthquake), and during the operation "Iraqi Freedom" he was embedded on a USS aircraft carrier. Kouratzis' photographs have been collected by private collectors in Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Brazil, Belgium, and the USA. They have also been featured in publications such as books and catalogs, including the Press and Information Office's publications for the Republic of Cyprus. His articles on photography and journalism have been published in Cyprus, Greece, the USA, England, and Poland.
