About The Artwork

This image was photographed in Israel and repainted digitally by hand. The series was inspired by the ancient tradition of glass making still going on in the Middle East today. My interpretation goes beyond the surface of the material, introducing texture, contemporary colours, and movement. Set into deep space, I wanted to deliver a narrative that is abstract and imaginative, compelling the viewer to return to the image again and again, always finding something new.

Award nominated and completely self taught, Alice Gur-Arie's contemporary, limited edition, mixed media images have been auctioned at Christie's and exhibited at the Embassy of Iceland. Her artwork is held in private art collections in the UK, US, Israel, Germany and Canada, and features on book covers in the US and around the world. Alice began her career as a conceptual copywriter, graphic designer, and creative director, eventually responsible for positioning global brands, and developing and executing their marketing strategies. Several years ago she returned to her creative roots, publishing work that "sits in the sweet spot where painting and photography converge.” The concept of "seeing" is at the heart of her practice. A self taught artist, her work combines photography with digital painting, inviting the viewer to replace the window through which they see the world, with a lens that interprets the world into something that is at once familiar and foreign. The process begins with photographs, which Alice takes around the world. Treating a photograph as a canvas, images are digitally "repainted" by hand with a "brush", sometimes in layers, sometimes pixel by pixel. Inspired by the natural world, landscapes, seascapes, wildlife and images of nature dominate her portfolio, ranging in style from bold saturated abstracts to soft, textured tones.
