Each time I walk past the kitchen chimney in the abandoned farmhouse I refer to as Grey House, I am struck by the countless number of times it has been repainted or wallpapered over. Like the rings of a tree trunk, these layers illustrate the age of the this empty place. Personal tastes of past residents, fads, even repairs become evident as time peels away surface. Weather does its part here as well, creating a bouquet of moldy blooms to match the faded floral wallpaper. Looking around at this kitchen I can't help but ponder those who came before me, those who once called this ownerless kitchen theirs. I am captivated by the effects of weather and time on abandoned interiors. Each time I enter an empty house I am amazed and inspired by the beauty of the layers being stripped away, by the chemistry of the elements and the building materials interacting with each other, as though the wind and rain are painting abstract masterpieces on the dilapidated walls, ceilings, and floors. This image is printed with Epson archival pigment inks on ultra premium Epson paper.
