About The Artwork

The New York City branch of Takashimaya, the great Japanese retail establishment, commissioned photographer Susan Salinger to create a limited edition, boxed set of five images of objects of interest to her from throughout the store, and to interpret them in her unique photographic style. An exhibition of the images at the 5th Avenue store accompanied the launch of the edition. This image is of an exquisitely rare, highly glazed Tokoname, Shudei Zisha Hobin Kyusu teapot from the region of Kyoto, Japan. This photograph is selenium toned, silver-based fiber print. The selenium toning gives a rich deep tone to the blacks and golds while retaining detail in the whites. Susan Salinger is a highly regarded artist, dancer, choreographer and professional photographer. Her photographic clientele is extensive and include Ferragamo, Cartier, J. Mendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Takashimaya, and Forbes Magazine. Using a scanning electron microscope, Susan's ant portraits of extreme close-up imagery can be equated to both alien forms and perfect examples of form and function. She is currently working on an art video and still photography project shot in the Great Salt Lake Basin of Utah, another video essay on jellyfish in the Bosphorus Sea near Istanbul, and will soon begin a series of images of the Sahara Desert to be shot in Morocco in fall of 2018.
