Tap Dance in 14/4 (Triptych) - Limited Edition of 5 Photograph

This work takes its title from colorful signage inside the subway station: "Tap & Go" transfers its slogan to the movement within this metallic, proscenium stage. Likewise, the exit at this junction is 14th Street and 4th Avenue -- the exit sign respectively signals a time signature ("14/4") for the piece. Thus a dance emerges within the underground: the central figure moves in sequential increments as camera perspective shifts. Surrounding passengers bustle through the halls in their supporting roles. The metal railing resembles a classical ballet barre, upon which the main figure leans in pose. I am also inspired here by the iconic Tricia Brown rooftop performance in New York City, 1973, "Roof Piece," as photographed by Babette Mangolte. As a major statement within the New York conceptual movement, this performance legitimized site-specific dance performance inside the industrial mass that comprises much of New York City. It is appropriate to recognize and honor the city's lived, communal experience as a multiplicity of contemporary sites that co-create visual and performative artworks.
