Television shaped all of our lives, especially those of us who were children of the fifties, sixties, seventies, and eighties. I was born at the end of the "Summer of Love" and the revolution was not broadcast, how could it be? When there was one nationwide channel -and so many competing ideas, but only three obsessions that were underpinned New Zealand cultural life, Rugby, racing, and beer were the big three down here. There were plenty of ideas -and great things going on artistically, culturally -but there were only so many broadcast hours available. Television was once the cyclopoid screen through which we viewed the world, and as such had an inordinate amount of power to influence the masses. Although we now have a vast array of media through which we witness the world (and the world watches us) the programming on offer is (for the most part) very similar.
