This cyanotype (or photogram) is part of a series called "The Secret Life of Rock Pools. There are 100 cyanotypes in this series which are all made at low tide in tidal pools on the South African shoreline. I use a historical photographic process from the 1840's to capture life in tidal pools. The photographs are developed in the sun on the beach and I like to think of my work as a collaboration with nature. I coat good quality watercolour paper with a photo sensitive emulsion in the studio and take it to the beach where I make photograms using seaweed, sand and other bits and pieces collected from the rock pools. Each piece is placed with thoughtful consideration and precision to create works of interest and depth.

South Africa
I'm a multi-disciplinary artist and don't believe in limiting yourself to one art form. One day I might be making jewellery, another cyanotypes, collage or ceramics. I strive to create artwork that celebrates the natural world and find inspiration from the rural landscape and ocean in my home country. I don't always know where I'm going with my creations but I try not to overthink things and to create without limitations or fear.
