About The Artwork
The 3 concrete acoustic mirrors at Greatstone near Denge in Kent, UK. The three concrete " listening ears" at Greatstone range in size from 20 to 200 feet in size. Built between 1928-30, the sound mirrors were part of Britain's national defence strategy. They were designed to pick up the sound of approaching enemy aircraft. Sound waves were caught in the belly of the mirror and relayed back through microphones and a stethoscope to an operator who raised the alarm. Anti-aircraft defences were then deployed. The mirrors effectively gave Britain a fifteen-minute warning of an impending attack. Signed Limited Edition | Ready-to-Hang. Originally from Cheshire (UK), I started out painting with watercolour and later studied technical drawing as part of my engineering qualifications. Photography offered the perfect blend of art and science and my fascination began; travelling widely with my engineering work I found urban artistic inspiration in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Toronto. Settling in London over 20 years ago, I now live among neighbourhoods and buildings which support my passion for abstract, architectural and street photography. Influenced by my background, one could say I shoot with the eyes of an impressionistic painter and the mind of an engineer. I take inspiration from everyday objects, surfaces and scenes which are often transformed into the extraordinary, surreal or abstract. I'm drawn to urban oddities, colourful collisions, deep perspective and playful geometry. To capture the most compelling stories I prefer to shoot spontaneously, unbound by genre or subject.
