About The Artwork

Designed by the eminent architect Ralph T. Walker, the Time Square building is a Rochester treasure. Mr.Walker designed the, "Wings of Progress" to represent the age of aviation and technology. It is notable that the building's cornerstone was set on "Black Tuesday." Several years ago, following a string of life changing events, I moved into a downtown loft whose windows faced Times Square. Needing an activity for both enrichment and distraction I decided to start taking pictures. I knew nothing about photography but being intrigued by the "Wings," I set my camera on automatic and began to shoot. As I edited the RAW images I began to see details that I had not seen before. Now, after many years, this elegant structure that serves as my "anchor" is still both surprisingly new and yet ever changing in my eyes. I am quite certain that when I sit with my laptop and work on it's image, I am looking through a window into Mr. Walker's mind, heart and soul. It has been a joy to bring this stunning example of public art to the attention of Rochestarians. I like to imagine that because of my work, a few busy people, while trekking from point A to point B on a cold Rochester afternoon, may find themselves pausing for a moment to look up and enjoy Mr. Walker's gift to our city. Note: This piece is a unframed print.

In the words of the great physicist Richard Feynman, "I am an explorer." In the BBC production, "The Pleasure of Finding Things Out" Professor Feynman explains what electromagnetic waves would look like if we could see them. He describes waves bumping into each other, interfering with one another, moving through space and through us at the speed of light and being present everywhere at the same time. I like to think of my Nikon D800 as a wave collector, a SIM card as a palate of captured light, and my images as paintings that represent the choices that I've made at moments in space and time. As as science educator and college professor I make it a point to teach my students the relationship that exists between science and art. Hopefully, they will fear science less if they can begin to see its beauty.
