About The Artwork

Photography. A construction of a rubbish dump. I started working on this project when I was temporarily living in Japan. The starting point was the contradiction in the Japanese society, where there are so many traditions in for example, products, dining and ceremonies that have an old aesthetics which is simple and stripped– but at the same time Japan is overflowing with plastic trinkets with no real use. And these two very different worlds are, surprisingly, coexisting very well in Japan. The second of the pair, the world of trinkets, was so very significant and it makes our over consumption so apparent. These superfluous things have been an important source of inspiration and anxiety for me at the same time. My project “Things” focuses on overconsumption. We throw away so many things and we buy more and more even though we talk about climate change ending the world as we know it - we still don´t act accordingly. We are trapped in the consumer rat wheel spinning faster every day and the speed of product life cycles increase. The market always needs to increase their sells to make the world’s economy work. We have never produced and consumed the amounts we are doing today. We believe that our shopping will make us happier but instead it is probably just weighing us down and in a strange way makes us want to have even more things. This is a source of great anxiety for me, not only because I worry about our future, but also as a designer myself I am part of the consumerism food chain. I started to work on the project “Things” to use art as a political statement. I am using my art as a carrier of the message I am passionate about and want to influence society with. I made (some are still unfinished) jewelry and objects, primarily in metal to highlight this. I am also making an animated film, photography, installation, and an experimental project with myself. In the jewelry I am for example questioning the fact that all designers should make their own chair. A new groundbreaking, more comfortable and better looking one than what already has been done throughout the history. To have these on the body marks the abundance we have to carry along very clear. The project I had with myself which is newly finished was a Consumption stop for one year. I have not been allowed to by any new things, if I really needed something I had to buy it second hand. It has been very interesting to understand my own consumption patterns. It has also been reliving and liberating not to go in to any shops. Not to feel like I have to know what are the latest trends. Not to keep track of what the market has to offer. The exceptions were vital things like food and shampoo and things for my company as materials and tools which are essential for my job.
