From the series Umbrellas. There was a time when manipulation of photographic negatives was seen as a crime. The camera never lies or so it was claimed. At first glance you might think that Umbrellas is created with the usual Photoshop sorcery. But you would be wrong. Umbrellas continues in the grand tradition of urban street photography with the minimum of interventions. The photos are created, quite simply, with a basic camera, a car windshield and lashings of rain. As the rain beats down, the world dissolves. Note: Some of the Umbrella series (this photo for example) have what appear to be reflections and scratches on the print. These imperfections are not in fact imperfections. They are a part of the photo. They add to the authenticity of the process. The small scratches are embedded in the glass of the car windscreen. Sometimes they are visible, other times they merge with the water and become invisible.
