In 2014 I raised $9000 and hired 5 airplanes to pull 25 banners that I had made of people's personal messages; sort of like cave drawings or markings. The planes pulled the banners just off-shore at a beach near Atlantic City, NJ. Instead of advertising suntan lotion or a clam bar, the personal messages were flown for a few passes while I communicated with the pilots via radio with a representative from the plane company who was with me on the ground. The camera position was stationary. The only variables were: the light, the banners, people's positions/interactions on the beach, the colour of the ocean and the sky. It took about 4 hours to photograph all 25 banners. The project was an offshoot of another project; Voices In The Landscape, which is an ongoing project about personal and institutional messages. I make hand-crafted hardcover books printing each page myself, and then have the books hand bound by a bookbinder. Usually 2-3 at a time. Each page is available in (24x36" image) prints. Books are available as well. Each page is available for viewing on my site:www.buildingartcompany.net

Michael Rafelson's passion for photography has been a life-long affair. His education at Silvermine College of Art studying with John Cohen, and graduation with a BAAPA from the Media Studies program at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, where he studied with: Don Dickinson, Dave Heath, Rob Gooblar, Murray Pomerance, and many other inspiring teachers; exposed him to seminal artists such as: Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, Eugene Atget, Edward Weston, Paul Strand, and many others. This opened the doors to many questions and visual explorations which continue today in the social landscape tradition. The world is full of beauty and horror, and the people who have created both. This is what has led Michael to illustrate their stories in a fine aesthetic.
