About The Artwork

We the People: Ever since I started with the process of becoming a naturalized US citizen I began to play with the idea of recreating the US flag. Since I’m based in New York City and that’s the city I’ve documented the most, I started this process in my neighborhood, the West Village, at the red wall I photographed so much over the years, and then I began to look for a blue wall and a white one and once I found them I just stayed there taking pictures of people walking in the neighborhoods I inhabit ... It was a fascinating process for me, New York City is just a universe in itself and creating this flag in the city where millions of immigrants (like me) became locals, was my way of trying to visualize the “We" as opposed to the “I”. No matter how divided we think we are, we still are a community of people sharing a space in the world, and a way of life…

Xan Padrón (Ourense 1969) is a Galician photographer living in New York City. He received his first camera at the hands of the photojournalist Enrique Reza, who awoke in him a passion for the photography of the everyday, just as his father, the journalist Luís Padrón, awoke in him the patience to listen and observe stories. After diverse street photography projects in New York City, in 2011 he began his acclaimed project, “Time Lapse”: a collection of portraits of various cities through the people who inhabit them. His series Time Lapse has been exhibited, among other places, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, The Pfizer Building in New York, the Sala Valente in Spain, and in the art fairs Photo LA, Art on Paper NYC and The Other Art Fair, presented by Saatchi Art in London, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Chicago. In 2023, Xan Padrón was invited by the MTA Arts & Design Program in New York City to exhibit a selection of his Time Lapse series at the Bryant Park subway station (42nd Street & 6th Avenue). His work has been featured in the cover of many international publications, including the cover of the autumn catalog of Saatchi Art (2019).
