About The Artwork

Made with a squash vine volunteer. Part of The New Herbarium series, inspired by Emily Dickinson, in which I reimagine the centuries-old process of collecting and preserving plants for science and art. The original piece is made with mushroom spores. I've adapted the mushroom spore print in form and medium to create works on paper that convey mycorrhiza, the ancient collaboration between plants and mushrooms.

b. 1961, Norwalk, CT. Lives and works in western Massachusetts Madge Evers is an educator, gardener, and visual artist whose work celebrates regeneration and transformation. She has been paying close attention to signs of fungi since 2015, when she began making mushroom spore print art. Referencing photosynthesis and the ancient collaboration in mycorrhiza, her practice involves foraging for mushrooms and plants, and sometimes includes the cyanotype process and paint. Evers was a teacher in Rhode Island and Massachusetts public schools for 25 years and now works as a full-time artist. She continues to connect with students by teaching cyanotype workshops to people of all ages.
