Shutter speed is a necessary element to relate to. In the early days photographers were forced to employ long exposure times, the subjects were blurred and so were the portraits. Photography was incapable of keeping its promise: the reality was not being captured. Exposure time has become an obvious component of the grammar of photography. In this work the time component of the photographic medium has been exceptionally expanded. The studio is set up in such a way that camera can capture what the eye cannot see. The room is dark, but for the digital clock that feebly lights up the subject, its only light source. I am present, yet I cannot see. The exposure time amounts to thirty minutes. Breathing and readjusting for balance produces slow, imperceptible movements that the camera records. Photography, which we instinctively believe to reflect the truth, projects what our senses will never be able to perceive. Around thirty people have taken part in the project: each of them has entered the same space, has posed and waited with me for the optical medium to record. In the resulting print the individual images are superimposed, the single space of the room is recreated and all the exposure times are added up in a single image. The author is concealed and the task of forming the image is entrusted entirely to the medium. Once again, it is the illusory capacity of photography that creates the identity of the subject. The work is part of the Photography Collection of the Galleria Civica di Modena.
