About The Artwork

Six Months Six Locations - October 22 This print is one of six in a series. The series explores the life a couple taking on the United States around the 1960s. They were known as 'snowbirds’, like the migrating birds to warmer weather pulling a trailer to explore and enjoy their retirement years. This illustrative print series inspired by my Master's thesis, 'The Modern Nomads.' With materials I found from my grandparents' collection, photographs, postcards, daily journal writings, and maps, I created a visual story through six locations around the greater United States. The medium explored lithography (machine) for the 4-color imagery first, then hand-pulled screen printing of spot colors on the individual prints. Printed on archival printmaking paper

Lorna Turner is a practicing artist, educator and graphic designer living in Los Angeles. Currently she works on various graphic design projects that range from branding small businesses to creating their strong web presence. Lorna teaches at Otis College of Art - Continuing Education and the Art Institute, Los Angeles. I am drawn to nostalgic visuals that appear in the landscape. From discarded signage, abandoned houses, unused industrial facilities, or public spaces, I am fascinated how we in society can make that selection. I often look for places that have lost their luster or an environment where natural growth has reclaimed the location. Many of the photographs, or screen prints I create, have lonely qualities, harking back to a narrative now left to the imagination of the viewer. Through my creative approach, either through screen prints, typographic explorations, or photography, I tend to be pulled towards the deterioration and layering of years and texture, which I find magical.
