Antarctica Postcard 16 - Limited Edition of 4 Print

My grandfather was based in Antarctica for a number of years to build scientific bases for South African universities. These were all photographs he took over the years documenting his work and domestic life in the arctic cold. All the photographs he took over the years still only exist as slides. Through this project I wanted to memorialize my grandfather’s life in Antarctica and to bring the photographs into a physical form. The finial images were created by layering 2 to 3 slides one on top of the other on a light box, I then photographed the slides with a micro zoon camera lenses. This created new landscapes, environments and narratives. Yet still encapsulating my grandfather’s memories of his life there. From the digital stage the photographs were turned into a digital lithograph and made each photograph standard sized postcards, each with their own postage stamp at the back of the artwork.
