About The Artwork

Photolithography, rubber based ink on ruled notebook paper. This is just one composition of two-hundred individual drawings about the wave of child sexual abuse and post traumatic stress caused by Roman Catholic priests. The original drawings are part of an interactive installation that allows the viewer to touch all of them, but only within the public sphere and only while being filmed. These drawings were first displayed lying on a toddler's bed with a cross nailed high above it, a standard Catholic cross shipped from Rome and blessed by the Holy See, Pope Benedict XVI. The name of the installation was taken from a quote by the Pope's Chief Exorcist, his reply when questioned about the Vatican's alleged involvement in covering up decades of abuse by priests around the world was simply: "The Devil is at work inside the Vatican." This composition in print was a later development of the interactive, tactile component of the project. A selection of thirty photolithographic plates were prepared to print off a small edition of five books using iconic Argentinean school journals, particularly one that children still use now to learn how to read and write. This is page 17.

Born in 1985, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Based since 2003 in London, UK.

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Magdalena Suranyi is a multi-media artist based in London since 2003. She completed a Foundation course in Central Saint Martins in 2004 and a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2007. Her persisted choice in medium has been figurative large-scaled drawings and paintings which create a natural link between her political tendencies and the development of murals or (ideally) some form of public art.

Through her compositions, she encourages a deliberate excess, the uncomfortable use and abuse of socially charged death-imagery. Her concern with human rights, gender roles and archetypical imagery that accost deep-seated stereotypes and learned behaviors has been described as consistent and profound.

These confrontational visuals work on a number of levels as she hopes to strike a balance between topical and specific historical references and a kind of inconclusive universality. The nature of the compositions are defined and largely controlled by her merged interests in violent global patterns, developmental psychology and gender related studies. Moreover, her painting and drawing has morphed into installation work that occasionally includes elements of performance and she has also been developing her collaborative, printmaking and curatorial abilities in a consistent string of art events in London and abroad.
