My Etchings are a response to the memory of a person experience of a place or moment. Conveying a romantic quality the etching captures the dynamic blur between the relationship between the figure and landscape in which they are in as they becomes in awe of their surroundings. Capturing a fisherman, who is a good friend of mine, wading into the stormy river Dee estuary. The copper plate undergoes multiple stages of aqua-tinting, hard-grounds, burnishing and dry-point evoking a view of North Wales seen to be enveloped by the atmosphere. Printing using hand-mixed black from: red, blue and yellow ochre inks, produce a print with a deep black, but with unique mediating fluctuations of colour. Along with the painterly inking process of removing ink from the plate, the made black gives subtle illusion of depth. The print is 3/100 and is printed on hand-pressed 300gsm cream summerset paper

I am an artist based in Newcastle Upon-Tyne. My paintings and prints extenuate the inner conflict between light and dark in a photograph. I have found the quality and transience of light to be the most vital element, detaching the viewer from their perspective of the subject. The presence of light creates an abstraction through glazing; light ultimately determining what we see making the physical composition almost redundant. Light begins to envelop the landscape or the figure, removing form from the painting. I also work from memory of past experiences by evading connotations to the pictorial representation my work, determining a relationship between the subject matter, craftsmanship and the surface quality of the artwork.
