About The Artwork

These are two 18 x 24" original monotypes each framed to 23 x 29" in white wood frames. Framed in a 3/4 inch wide, 3/4" deep white solid wood frame with a 2-inch wide mat. Together they would span 48 inches horizontally with a 2 inch gap between them. Though they resemble block prints or screen prints, they are a kind of 19th century cameraless photography called a cyanotype. If matted and framed in 24 x 30" standard frames, they will span over 4 feet horizontally with a gap. Every one of my botanical cyanotypes is a one-of-a-kind made using fresh cut plants from my own garden. Agapanthus flowers are originally from South Africa. They can be blue or white and grow on very long thick single stems reaching 3-4 feet tall in clusters. "Cyan" means blue in Greek and cyanotypes are normally blue and white. This cyanotype started as a blue print but was "toned" or altered in color through a soaking in sodium carbonate, a natural detergent. The darker the original blue print, the darker the yellow will be upon toning (altering the color). The bleaching process takes an extra hour or two, and there is always the possibility of destroying the original blue print if small spots in the original resist changing color from blue to yellow and remain as dark splotches on the yellow. Thus the cost for the yellow is a bit higher than for my blue cyanotypes of the same size.

The distant blue hills of my “Faraway Hills” series are ever-present fixtures in my real life. Down below is the bay and above is an endless web of tree branches. Their silhouettes have etched themselves into my memory. My paintings and prints are always nature-inspired and nearly always monochromatic. Having spent a decade as a printmaker making woodcuts, linocuts, etchings, aquatints and monotypes, my mind works in monochrome. I focus on a single color, composition, positive and negative space, pattern, lines and shape. I currently work in two mediums, acrylic painting and cyanotypes, a form of camera-less photography. Cyanotypes are a 19th century form of lensless photography also known as photograms, blueprints and sun prints. They resemble block prints or etchings but use no ink nor printing press. Light “etches” the image on paper I had painted with light-sensitive chemicals. MY NEWEST SERIES OF ABSTRACT CYANOTYPES: My technique is a form of experimental photography, much like the action painters Morris Louis, who poured his veil paintings, or Jackson Pollock who dripped and drizzled his. My abstract cyanotypes are luminous like watercolor paintings but are actually photographs. Each is a multiple-exposure lensless photograph make through deliberate movements of the light-sensitive paper during exposure to light. 

Different sections of the paper were exposed to light for a longer or shorter time, yielding multiple shades of blue. Each abstract cyanotype is entirely unique. These same lines, shapes and shades of blue cannot be recreated as the exposure of the paper was heavily manipulated by me during each printing.
