I guess by now you could say I grew up in Iowa. My family moved up here in 1999 when I was 10 or so. Then, out of some masochistic drive or something, I decided to go to Iowa State University. It was always my dream to leave this place. I tried. Twice in fact. After graduation I got a job out in Aspen, Colorado changing the color and texture of stone on a vacation home for one of the Waltons. One day it would be too blue. The next too green. The next.. let's just see a range of beige yellows. The first vacation home I ever worked on was 60,000 square feet. Aspen wasn't ever meant to be a permanent thing. I was just there until my girlfriend at the time graduated with her master's. She did and we ended up in Cleveland where I was confronted with all of the wonderful things american cities have to offer. Opportunity. Income inequality. Racial disparity. real and actual slum lords. The relationship couldn't survive this post college reality and so it was back to Iowa for me. Three years later and I'm bound for Naples, Italy to attend a new master's level program called Building Beauty situated in a 300 year old monastery overlooking the bay and Mount. Freaking. Vesuvius. Maybe this time I'll be able to stay away for a little longer. It's not that I have any grudge or animosity toward this place. It's just that it's so damned cold all the time! That and it's boring. It's so damned boring.
