Art Description

Printmaking: Algorithmic Art on Paper.

I took a large resolution image of the Black Square by Malevich and averaged the color values of all the pixels.

Then I had the resulting monochrome printed at the size of the original painting by a commercial printer on a A0 poster.

This is the Black Square by Malevich calculated back to a further level of abstraction, of minimalism. Does it still retain some of its soul? Does it do it more or less than the more figurative ones in the series?

What does digitising an artwork really mean? How far back or down can you take pixelation. What is the essence of a work of art? Can you reproduce or approach the material presence of a work of art?

I have made and plan to make several version of the work on different papers or medium, using different printing techniques and finishes.

This one is printed 4/0 CMYK on A0 - 840 x 1189 mm paper 250 g/m² satinated MC paper. Printed on a Océ Colorado UV ink commercial printer. Matt laminated on printed side. Signed on the back side. Edition of 1.
