Notable Women - £50 Sarah Guppy & Tilly Shilling - Limited Edition 100 of 100 Print

This is part of a set. When the Bank of England announced their intention to remove the image of Elizabeth Fry from the £5 note, the only one of four bank notes to show a woman, I signed the online petition started by the feminist activist and journalist, Caroline Criado-Perez. But I wanted to do more. The Bank of England have strict criteria for who can be shown and with these rules in mind, I started to think about who I would add. The above are my Notable Women. Each note is stamped with ink matching the actual bank note over the portrait of the man, or men previously chosen by the Bank of England. The double portrait on the £50 note is of two female engineers; Sarah Guppy (1770-1852) and Beatrice 'Tilly' Shilling (1909-1990). This is an ongoing and unlimited series. These notes are held in the collections of The British Museum, London, The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and The Smithsonian, Washington USA.
