About The Artwork

The Bordeaux colorway of the OUTLAW series printed in partnership in Como Italy on 70% wool 30% Silk - the fabric is woven like hospital gauze. This piece is supplied folded in a gift box with commemorative card. Growing up there was always a wealth of western/southwestern influence thanks to my father. On Sundays we watched many of the spaghetti westerns that aired- Which in turn began my fascination with film scores and the iconic music of the aforementioned genre (Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schifrin, etc). He was a big Roy Rogers fan, and when he passed had many commemorative items including a rotted/rusted tin lunch box. There were small bags that contained a few sterling/turquoise pieces. Thus when deciding on a large panel scarf series- The Outlaw was born. The color palettes were most important- pulling elements from the surroundings such as bloodshed, steel, gold, patina leather, tobacco, cactus, clay. The illustration was layered with an altered image of water-stained paper- giving the illusion of distress- the feel of a "WANTED" poster. This piece represents hardship, resilience, survival, grit, genocide, and fantasy. The American Cowboy persona that became beloved folklore, but represented a time of lawlessness and survival. The distinctive Navajo print placed in the background- symbolic of another Indigenous culture suffering at the hands of Imperialism and conquest- yet also serving as the backbone and foundation from which the country was reimagined. When worn as a scarf, it becomes a conversation piece for sake of vanity- familiarity of patterns and interest in color. When framed and viewed from an intellectual perspective, the panel has many stories to tell. A reflective piece for us as Americans. There is beauty in hardship- which was certainly a theme for me during the time I created this.

Illustrator, Artist, Designer for X of Pentacles- a design house based in Richmond, Virginia. Prior to working as a designer/illustrator, I was previously enrolled in the local police academy. Two months shy of graduating- I suffered a concussion during training that left me with cognitive deficits. Months later I lost my father to a heart attack, and shortly after lost our home. I began sketching as a form of bereavement and outlet to cope with my losses. Once symptoms began to improve, I taught myself graphic design, illustration, sewing and used those skills to create the brand known as X of Pentacles. Paired with my obsessive passion for textiles and classic menswear- began releasing limited prints in partnership with high-end fabric mills in England and Italy. Most of my works are related to my journey in starting the brand, and are such reflections of personal stories and influences from my life - Music, Literature, Cinema, Fashion, Western Occult/Esoteric Ideology. Some of these were classic black & white films that I watched when I couldn't tolerate color television as a result of my injury. Some works were influenced by memories of my father or items I sifted through when we lost our home. My use of new media (graphic illustration) allows me to explore art through use of tangible traditional tools (charcoal, ink, pen, photography, graphite, watercolor) and employ them in a digital space via textile. All of my work comes from a place of resilience. I have no formal training as an artist, and often struggled with giving myself that title- yet art was what allowed me to experience emotion again, during a time when it had all been drained from me.
