About The Artwork

This is a multi-layered etching on Hahnamuhle cotton rag paper. It was printed from two steel etching plates and then hand painted to make the red 'pop'. This artwork was inspired by a recent trip to Europe. I have a Polish heritage and this artwork reflects on a moment when I was walking through the old town in Warsaw. I felt so melancholy and emotional, like I was so at home but completely alone. I knew I didn't belong there and I felt lost in that moment. But at the same time, I was travelling and visiting family and there was a sense of hope and love. I have tried to capture this feeling within this etching.

Kate Piekutowski is an Australian/Polish artist who works as a printmaker and textile designer. She has a Masters in Fine Arts (Printmaking) and specialises in multi-layered etchings, taking the traditional technique of etching on steel and making it contemporary. Her beautiful etchings explore her Polish Heritage and a longing to return to her European homeland. Through dark and light plate tone, Piekutowski is infatuated by a personal arcadia, a narrative between two places. She is drawn to children's stories including The Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins, where motifs including red umbrellas and red shoes are a symbol of hope and returning home. Discovering a connection between identity and place has been a key theme in Piekutowski’s work. She has travelled on numerous artist residencies to explore these concepts including Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, India, New Zealand and Australia. She has also exhibited in over 50 solo, group and curated exhibitions as well as taught workshops and printmaking classes for the past 5 years.
