About The Artwork

"Poppy" is part of a set of six small flower images we did in 1993. They each have an accent color , red being the operative here. There are some surreal elements in this composition , unintentional, at least on a conscious level. Perhaps the working on the prints brought out the other image in the background. About our process: This image went through a number of stages, sketches and color studies to compile into the full size “master drawing” , from which different stencil areas were prepared by the artists (Liz and Hal) and adhered to silk screens. Each imprint requires some time to set up, register, add oil paints to the screen, blend, consider the color and the gradation, and when satisfactory, then screen that color onto all the sheets of rag paper. (We typically started with 50 sheets of paper, which allows leeway for experimenting, and does not take too long for each imprint.) there is always clean-up too. In that way, we could sometimes do several color imprints in one day. It generally goes from printing large areas that set the tone, to gradually more detailed imprints . There is an unmistakable graphic quality to a piece of art that is made in this medium.
