This is a painting done by Jef Bourgeau. Jef Bourgeau is an American photographer, painter and conceptual artist who has become notorious through his sculptures, photography and curatorial work. The most famous and provocative of Bourgeau's work plays on the relationship between iconic imagery and irreverent materials, together forming a new context often drawing upon current controversies and, perhaps, the willfully provocative. Most notable to date are his censored works. 'Nigger Toe' and 'Bathtub Jesus' public exhibition was raided by police and brought Bourgeau to trial on obscenity charges, his piece 'Van Gogh's Ear' was padlocked by the Detroit Institute of Art. Jef Bourgeau is the founding director of the Museum of New Art (MONA), of Detroit's artCORE (empty storefronts to galleries), director of the Museum of Photograpy and New Media, and co-founder of the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography. Neo-Impressionists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac pioneered a painting technique, dubbed Pointillism, that was revolutionary for its time. Bored of traditional paintings, artists of the era were searching for new ways to make “impressions” of landscapes and day-to-day life. Seurat and Signac looked to science for inspiration, and discovered how to trick the eye into seeing more in a painting than the sum of its parts: an arrangement of colored dots. Informally known stippling art or dot art, since its inception, Pointillism has influenced many artists working across a diverse range of mediums, and today we see traces of it in modern art, fashion, and even tattoos. Cutting edge artist Jef Bourgeau take the idea and the technique to the new century.
