About The Artwork

Discarded t-shirts from refugees on Lesvos, Inkodye light emulsion prints, life jacket swatches, tape A collection of the eyes of refugee women and children printed on clothing discarded by refugees on Lesvos. These fabrics were collected, washed, and donated by Dirty Girls of Lesvos. Created from 77 photographs of eyes, which is representative of numerology associated with Jesus Christ and the most widely recognized number of branches in Islam, are the final component to this project. They represent the estimated 6,000 lives lost in the Aegean Sea.

Aubrey Roemer was born in Rochester, NY. She received her BFA from Pratt Institute; interning with NYC artists and galleries, and working as Americorps Scholar. She was a journalist for Art Observed, specializing in covering the NYC auction season. Post collegiately, she held residencies in the USA, Europe, and Asia: at Vermont Studio Center, in England at 42 Acres, and at Kio­-a-­Thau Sugar Refinery Artist Village in Taiwan. In 2016, she participated in NYU Tisch’s The Season Comedia Del’Arte in Florence, Italy, as an Assistant Art Collaborator. Roemer received grants from Do Your Part & Paddlers For Humanity in 2016, World Connect in 2015, and ARTwerk in 2014. She has internationally exhibited and garnered press for her work. In 2015, she spoke at the Parrish Art Museum’s Pecha Kucha night about her portrait projects. She is represented by artist group Artshape Mammoth. Currently, Roemer has projects in Nicaragua, Indonesia, and Greece: with La Isla Foundation addressing the CKDu epidemic, environmental initiatives as the Oceans Care Director of Art and Communications, and with Greek NGOs Desmos and Metadrasi working on refugee relief.
