I work with scientific materials in order to learn more about the objects I am creating. Using the same principles of ‘mapping an area’ out, which I was (am) researching, about obtaining as much information in one image as possible. I used an image I had taken of a rock, when I was in the Faroe Islands. The rock is made basalt making it fairly dark in colour. The image needed to be zoomed in, enough to crop out everything around the rock, making it the centre of focus. The image was divided into nine sections, this helped keep the resolution higher and allows me to blow the image up with out loosing much detail. I intentionally darkened the image to hide some of the detail so not to reveal too much of what the image could be. The idea I was experimenting with was changing the perception of what you were looking at without changing what the image was, just how it was viewed. The darkness in the images, which has been manipulated (a little bit) in photoshop to hide some of the details which make it a bit too obvious that it is the surface of a rock. The process of bitmapping and screen printing the image also help distort it from the original, and with the printing process I do have control over how it is applied and how much paint and medium is pushed through the mesh. I think the image presents a mystery about it because you are not able right away to tell what it is. It has the perfect balance I was aiming for, a combination of it looking like a satellite image being pieced together and the creative control influencing the fictional aspect. I was aiming for the outcome to be something which people had a hard time guessing what it is, but because of the richness of the details it would still be interesting and resembles loads of things, making it an individual experience.
