About The Artwork

This etching celebrates the intangible phenomenon of growing up. It is a physical growing up of a child towards adulthood and also it is a growing up of the person and the adult in spirit as his or her life enfolds. In this composition there is a small girl kneeling on a seashore with her back to the ocean. The four gold leaf balls stretch into the vast area of the ocean at the back of the person's head and this marks the unconscious aspect of the phenomenon of growing up. The way most of us are unconscious of the reasons and the way we were born and appeared in this world we are also not entirely conscious of the incredible development or journey we conduct or participate in throughout our lives. Gold leaf in my work usually appears in places where I try to touch upon the ineffable, or the ephemeral, as here I feel that the concept of growing up in the context of the entire composition could not have been demonstrated otherwise. This is an etching of carefully worked out four surfaces, or four plates, influencing one another very much in the spirit of classical or traditional abstract expressionism. It is a bit like orchestration of a musical piece which is made of many individual sounds made by specific instruments that come together to create a symphony, a sum all of the sounds that evolves as an entirely new entity.

I am Fine Art Printmaker and Painter based in Kildare and Dublin. I am an Award winning printmaker, member of Graphic Studio Dublin. My later compositions, done as multi-plates etchings where the ocean, as the big home of the primordial life of the self, can be replaced by the bathtub, as the small home, when the self is in the mood of minimisation. Each work in fact is a ‘simple’, nature or landscape based composition, aiming to be a balanced and a pleasant visual creation, with a lot of energy in the pigments and the tones. In the same time, upon a prolonged observation, my work aims to unveil and communicate something of a metaphysical nature, an essence or a power that exists at the ebb of life, as principles, dealing with the question of the nature of our existence.
